What Makes Malayalam Literature Different?

A land with rich content by fabulous writers and equally beautiful works. That's how I would like to define Kerala, a state in the Indian subcontinent. I grew up reading books in both Malayalam and English languages. Having already mentioned English literature in my blog, now I want to write dreamily about Malayalam.

There is beauty and uniqueness in any and every language. Just like that, Malayalam literature is popular for its deep explanations of emotions, happenings, sensations, minute changes in nature etc. One can experience the ambient temperature of the story he or she reads. Malayalam literature's finest works speak a lot about the universe, its comedies. Like Shakespeare said,

''All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players''

This quote's essence, in my opinion, can be found in literary works from renowned Keralites.

I am pointing out some of the best writers here. Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, the romantic writer of Kerala had written numerous novels on distinguished and creative topics. It's so interesting to read the magic of this immortal writer, Basheer. The Walls (Mathilukal) by Basheer is a mesmerizing story of two prisoners and their love despite the huge walls being a barrier between them. His language, the words he use: they captivate people in a subtle yet powerful way. People love reading a Basheer. The very reason is his daring attitude to include wit into every phenomenon. How marvellous to find such a style of writing?

When Kamala Surayya wrote My Story (Ente Katha), the public went into a rage due to the fact that she jotted down some of the sensitive and intimate parts of her personal life. Discussions arose because they were shocked about Surayya's courage beyond the norms of so-called normal women. When society defined, and Kamala Surayya refused. Her works were a calm revolution I would say. Why should she be questioned for writing her own life at her own will?

Benyamin narrated through Goat Days(Aadujeevitham), a gruesome, yet enthralling story about an immigrant Indian in a Gulf country. The protagonist had to suffer tortures at the workplace and the theme just grabbed people by their tear-filled hearts. The book was so good that it got a movie adaptation with the male lead starred by Prithviraj Sukumaran. In case you're not familiar with the Malayalam film industry, Prithviraj is one of the jewels in the crown.

It's not done yet. There are several other passionate men & women in Kerala who gifted the meaning of life through their pens. Naming all of them would need 10 other pages. Malayalam literature is a promise to the peace for your mind and soul.

When I was a kid, I would ask my pappa (my grandfather) how do people imagine up things to write. Pappa would always answer: ''You read words, you get more words"

Malayalam language books are a personal promise from my side. I am not sure about passionate readers foreign to Malayalam but I think you could read translations or make use of internet, AI etc. :(

Try it: for those who are yet to begin.

Bon voyage: for those who are on the way.

Thank you.
